Edward James Olmos Talks FILLY BROWN Movie

Edward James Olmos Interview
Edward James Olmos executive produces the inspirational and gritty portrait of a young Los Angeles hip-hop artist in FILLY BROWN. The film was a family affair with his son co-directing and other son producing.  The Academy Award nominee talks about how the indie film came together with Kevin Smith coming in to save the day.

Directed by Youssef Delara and Michael Olmos, FILLY BROWN boasts an impressive cast featuring Lou Diamond Phillips, Edward James Olmos and the legendary Jenni Rivera in her final on-screen performance.  The lead, Gina Rodriguez, is being heralded as the new “it” girl for her performance as the fierce “Majo” Tonorio aka Filly Brown.

CineMovie’s Pili Montilla sat down with Edward James Olmos who stars and executive produces FILLY BROWN. His son Michael Olmos is half of the directing team while Mico, his other son makes his producing debut on FILLY BROWN, as well as appearing in the film and contributes to the soundtrack.  Olmos tells us his sons didn’t look towards their famous father for advice since both grew up in the business seeing the ups and downs of the business.  “It’s not a rosy… nice situation that happens because I am who I am,” he said. “I can open up the door, but they have to do all the work.”

The respected actor added that living in the shadows of famous parent often makes it more difficult to be taken seriously. Instead of being introduced as “this is so and so,” his sons often get “this is son of…”  That doesn’t mean he won’t lend a helping hand when his sons come calling with a worthy project.

Director/writer Kevin Smith stepped in to finance FILLY BROWN. Olmos tells Pili co-director Youseff Delara’s family brought in the independent filmmaker who broke into Hollywood by self-financing his films Clerks and Mallrats.

Olmos credits the well-written and inspirational script for bringing him and the likes of Kevin Smith, Jenni Rivera, Chingo Bling, and Lou Diamond Phillips to the project. “And if the story is being told with a very good script… Guess what, that story is going to be told,” says Olmos.

FILLY BROWN hits theaters April 19, 2013.
