Ben Affleck inherits the cowl as the eighth Batman in the movie franchise, but he’ll have to contend with Henry Cavill’s Superman in Batman vs. Superman with Zack Snyder returning in the director’s chair.
Fan boys and movie-goers have expressed their displeasure with the choice to replace Christian Bale, but at the heart of the complaint is that he failed to play another superhero with much gravitas when he assumed the identity of Daredevil in the 2003 movie. Here are four other actors who’ve taken on superhero status more than once, but the second time wasn’t the charm for some.
1. Halle Berry (Catwoman & Storm)
Since we don’t get many females in the category, let’s start with the sexiest one. Halle Berry has donned a leather suit for both Marvel and DC. The newlywed
is gearing up once again to play the silver-haired Storm in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past movie directed by Bryan Singer. But in 2004, she wasn’t too well received when she purred her way into a dominatrix cat suit as Cat Woman. Nothing good came out of it except a Razzie award.
2. Chris Evans (Captain America, Johnny Storm)
Before playing the goody-two-shoes Captain America, Chris Evans was the playboy Johnny Storm in two Fantastic Four movies. Starring in two Marvel comic book characters didn’t seem to hurt the Avenger any.
3. Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Green Lantern)
Playing Marvel’s anti-hero Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine didn’t stop Ryan Reynolds from jumping ship and choosing a DC Comic book character. Reynolds’ turn as the Green Lantern also failed to light up the box office, but at least he met his future wife.
4. Jim Carrey (Riddler, Mask, Kick Ass 2)
A green mask made Jim Carrey famous and put Cameron Diaz on the Hollywood map in The Mask. Green must be his lucky color as he went on to play the Riddler in Batman Forever with Val Kilmer as Batman. In his latest film, Carrey once again battles crime in green military fatigues as Colonel Stars and Stripes in Kick Ass 2.
5. Ben Affleck (Daredevil, Batman)
He may have revived his career as a serious actor and director, but now he’ll have to prove himself a certified superhero the second time around. In 2003, taking on the red leather-clad Daredevil didn't prove fruitful for the Marvel comic book adaptation. Perhaps he'll have better luck as a DC character. Like Ryan Reynolds, his first attempt at crime fighting may have tanked, but at least he scored a future wife.
