A preview of Tim Burton's stop-motion animation film FRANKENWEENIE has finally arrived in a teaser trailer. The preview sets up the story but leaves you wondering if the pooch unleashes Frankenstein-like horror on the town folk.

In the film, Victor looses his best friend Sparky, a canine that met an untimely end. Victor pulls a Frankenstein and brings back the weenie dog, hence the name FRANKENWEENIE. The trailer sets up the story of how the dog comes to be Frankenweenie but not much else. However, we can gather from the familiar story that Sparky's resurrection won't be an easy one or as the Disney description calls it "monstrous."

The black and white 3D film stars the voices of four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow).

Tim Burton originally conceived the idea for FRANKENWEENIE in 1984 but due to budget constraints he shot a live-action short. He revisited the idea when Disney approached him.  The film used over 200 puppets and sets for the stop-motion flick.  Several of the names—Victor, Elsa Van Helsing, Edgar “E” Gore and Mr. Burgemeister— were inspired by classic horror films.

FRANKENWEENIE releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012.
