Although Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels had on screen chemistry the first time as Harry and Lloyd, off screen the two stars are revealing they weren't all that comfortable unlike their reunion in DUMB AND DUMBER TO. Carrey is also talking about his interest in revisiting another one of his many characters.
It took twenty years for Jeff Daniels, Jim Carrey and the Farrelly Brothers to reunite for a follow-up to the 1994 comedy about two clueless friends. At a press event with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, Carrey joked he likes to wait for the “executives to pass on” before doing a sequel. Joking aside, the two actors said fans of all ages often approached them about doing a sequel. Daniels was surprised how the fan base has grown over the years.
“The demo kept getting wider and wider, and so it kind of demanded it get done. And we all wanted to do it.”
Carrey added that it’s not a sequel, but a “chic-quel” because it is so special to them. Another character he’d like to revisit in a “chic’quel” is Count Olaf from Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. The 2004 film adaptation of the popular book series hit a sour note with audiences, and hence any chance of a movie franchise. Carrey was disappointed there was no sequel. “It was an opportunity to do a lot of whacked out characters. He may get his wish. Three days after the DUMB AND DUMBER TO press day, Netflix announced they will be adapting the books into a new television show so he can always reprise his role, and it be more irreverent on the online streaming service.
When it came to dumbing down once again 20 years later, Daniels and Carrey said they fell right into character, but this time they were more comfortable with each other and the chemistry was “better” according to Daniels. The first time around was a “discovery” Carrey added, because they were meeting for the first time. “You’re kind of shy about it. Now it's like family."
The DUMB AND DUMBER TO stars spent the first two weeks shooting together without the new cast. When they watched playback of the bus scene, they were one happy family. “Aww they’re back! Carrey chimed in. “It kind of gave us a good feeling. It was like old friends.” For Daniels, the first two weeks back were also special.
“It was fun. We were slamming every day, all day. It was a great two weeks. It came back right away.”
