Movie Review: Ant-Man and the Wasp is Evangeline Lilly's Movie

Ant Man And The Wasp Paul Rudd Evangeline Lilly2

Evangeline Lilly steals the show in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, but Paul Rudd's endearing storyline, however, is what drives the film. The sequel is equally as much fun as the first one, and a nice distraction from Marvel's INFINITY WAR bummer finale.

Many of the same elements that made the first one enjoyable appear here including the laughs. Paul Rudd returns as one of the writers, and he along with four other writers make Scott's commitment as a father central to the plot. Abby Ryder Fortson, the young actress playing his daughter Cassie, also steals the show as she supports her father's supehero mission as his unofficial partner.  The three stooges are also back with Michael Peña once again providing lots of the giggles along with his partners in crime Dave (Tip 'T.I.' Harris) and Kurt (David Dastmalchian).

The action sequences in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP are amazing with both Ant-man and the Wasp morphing between sizes. The Wasp's action sequences are just super kick ass especially during the car chase scene. That is some flawless editing with the Wasp moving between cars. Evangeline Lilly was a force to reckon with in ANT-MAN without a suit, and now in the suit - she is a much better superhero than Ant-Man. Scott's supehero plays off his wit and he's still learning the ways of the saving the world especially in a new Ant-Man by Dr. Pym with cool features. That's part of Paul Rudd's charm, and he's extremely endearing even if he's fumbling his way through his powers.

It says a lot about the star and writer when he can share the screen with a partner who is tougher and better at fighting the bad guys.  Paul Rudd pointed out when CineMovie asked about it during the Los Angeles press conference that Hope is in the family business so naturally she's better at it. He also noted in the first film, she had much better fighting skills.

There's two villains in the ANT-MAN sequel with Ghost played by Hannah John-Kamen and Walter Goggins' Sonny both chasing after the Pym technology. Ghost is a cool mystery when she enters the picture but once we find out her motivation, it becomes less thrilling. Sonny and his goons are a match for Luis and his crew in humor but it makes them a little less threatening. Regardless, it gives Ant-Man and the Wasp a nemesis to fight for some thrilling action sequences.

Don't look for answers to INFINITY WAR in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. It's a standalone movie but stick around for the credits when the two worlds do collide.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP is an entertaining Marvel film for the whole family, but the more appropriate title should be THE WASP AND THE ANT-MAN.
