Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated electronic music pioneers, Nortec Collective Presents Bostich + Fussible, emerged in the late '90's from a burgeoning electronic scene in Tijuana. They are known for inventing a new style of music they call "Nortec," a fusion of Norte ("from the North") and Techno. Documenting the combination of electronic music characterized by heavy dance beats and traditional forms of Mexican music performed with live instrumentation, Nortec Collective paved the way for a new generation of producers and DJs that have reinvented electronic music from a global perspective. The group has performed at Coachella, Bonnaroo and toured around the world the last 15 years. Nortec Collective Presents Bostich + Fussible recently released a new album, "Motel Baja," the follow-up to their critically-acclaimed albums, "Tijuana Sound Machine" and "Bulevar 2000." The album also features collaborations with the Tom Tom Club (Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads), Atom (Señor Coconut), Wolfgang Flur (Kraftwerk), Kylee Swenson (Loquat) and composer Alberto Nunez Palacio.
El Conjunto Nueva Ola's mission is simple: bring flavor and get people to dance to the rhythm of cumbia, mixing new wave, rock and disco sounds into hits from various iconic groups. The group is comprised of lead singer Urbano Lopez, guitarist Luzio Nava, bassist Primitivo Rios, percussionist Hipólito Madero, El Tacho on timpani and El Raio Manzares on keyboards. A peculiar concept with unique characteristics, the group has drawn attention from fans, a fact that has led them to be known as "los enmascarados," or "the masked ones." Their faces are covered with "luchador" (wrestler) masks at all times, hiding the true identity of each group member, giving the group a distinctive and authentic feel.
With influences ranging from James Brown, Fela Kuti, Ray Barretto and Irakere, Jungle Fire is a melting pot of Afro-Cuban rhythms, classic break beats, tropical cumbia, and '70's inspired West African funk, all layered with a uniquely Los Angeles grit. They carry the torch of genre-defying iconic artists like War, Cymande and Manu Dibango. Jungle Fire has earned a reputation as a vibrant, passionate live band, known across the country and in the UK. The group has performed alongside artists like Shuggie Otis, Lee Fields and Charles Wright.
Best known as Boyle Heights' premiere global bass dance and visual arts collective, Subsuelo features resident DJs Gozar, Ethos, Gazoo and Canyon Cody and live flamenco band with La Tigresa, Gabriel Osuna and Gerardo Morales plus visuals by Juxli and photography by Farah Sosa. The crew is leading an eastside renaissance by taking on traditional Latin music, heavy-hitting club anthems, avant-garde electronica, orthodox hip-hop and experimental flamenco for a retro-futuristic party rooted in the past and moving towards the future. The group has collaborated with some heavy hitters, including Toy Selectah, Novalima, Nickodemus, Mexican Institute of Sound, Los Rakas, Nortec Collective, Money Mark (Beastie Boys), 2Mex, Eric Bobo (Cypress Hill), Nu-Mark (Jurassic 5) and more.
Maria y Jose is the brainchild of Tony Gallardo, a native of San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, but over the years has become a child of Tijuana. As one of the founders of the iconic COCOBASS netlabel, Gallardo has explored his love for foreign music and has been in a constant search for sacred rhythms and soundscapes that have led him to launch several materials during the past four years, mixing different genres and creating his own signature sound. The music of Maria Y Jose solidifies Gallardo as the new leader and one of the most important icons of "ruidoson" and the Mexican DIY electronic movement.
