‘Pitch’ Perfect: Fox’s New Baseball Series Starts With A Home Run

Pitch Kylie Bunbury review

With as many entertainment options as we have nowadays, it is a wonder that anything new ever grabs our attention. But that’s exactly what Fox’s new baseball drama does, right from the get-go.

Starring Kylie Bunbury as Ginny Baker, the first woman to play in the Major Leagues, "Pitch" spins a story that will appeal to ESPN-lovers as much as it does to fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The pilot dives into the action so quickly there is barely a moment to relax before the gut-punches start rolling in. It still, somehow, makes sense immediately… thanks to Bunbury’s character getting support from the likes of Ellen DeGeneres and Hillary Clinton. And even though she’s receiving the red carpet treatment ahead of her very first game as a starting "Pitch"er, more than a few of her teammates, including an almost unrecognizable Mark-Paul Gosselaar, would rather debate the merits of ass slapping and team building.

Naturally, this being a drama, all does not bode well for the First Lady of Baseball, thanks to the enormous pressure placed on her by fans and her father alike. That pressure is especially electric (and relevant) as we find ourselves in the heat of an election that could produce America’s first female president.

In addition to Bunbury and Gosselaar, the cast also includes Ali Larter, Mark Consuelos, and Naya Rivera’s husband Ryan Dorsey. Larter is the clear stand out, helping neutralize the baseball bravado brought on whenever the cameras take us inside the locker room.

Not that we’re complaining about following the story into the man cave that is the San Diego Padres’ locker room.

It will definitely be interesting to see how the series keeps the story moving forward, especially if it continues to center around Ginny’s deep dive into the Majors. It would be a disservice to the character to lose anything that this premiere sets up for her.

At any rate, "Pitch" is most definitely a show with a little something for everyone.

Whether you love baseball and apple pie, need a replacement for Friday Night Lights, or are simply into shirtless athletes, it will be hard to find a reason to turn the channel if you give this show a chance.

"Pitch" premieres Thursday, September 22nd on Fox.
