Opening in New York and Los Angeles in select theaters December 28th, Matt Damon co-wrote PROMISED LAND with The Office's John Krasinski. Matt Damon reunites with famed director Gus Van Sant for a third time as writer and star. Matt Damon, along with Ben Affleck, won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1998 for Good Will Hunting, directed by Van Sant. They worked once again in 2002 on Gerry, this time pairing with Casey Affleck on the screenplay.
This isn't John Krasinski's first rodeo as a screenwriter, having written the 2009 flick Brief Interviews with Hideous Men which he directed.
In PROMISED LAND, Damon and Krasinski take a page from real life and the recession as it affects a small town. Corporate salesman Steve Butler (Matt Damon) arrives in a rural town with his sales partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand). With the town having been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, the two outsiders see the local citizens as likely to accept their company’s offer, for drilling rights to their properties, as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job for the duo becomes complicated by the objection of a respected schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook) with support from a grassroots campaign led by another man (John Krasinski) who counters Steve both personally and professionally.
PROMISED LAND expands into more cities January 11, 2013.
