'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' Exclusive First Look

CineMovie had an exclusive opportunity for a first look at DreamWorks Animation latest animation project MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN at Fox Studios in Los Angeles. Along with never-before-seen footage, Director Rob Minkoff and Ty Burrell, the voice of Mr. Peabody, talked about their own adventures in bringing the classic characters to life.
The film is based on the original MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN, who was a fictional dog that appeared in the late 1950s and early 1960s television animated series Rocky and His Friends. Mr. Peabody appeared in the Peabody's Improbable History segments and was originally voiced by Bill Scott, while his human friend, Sherman was voiced by Walter Tetley.
In the 2014 version, Mr. Peabody (Ty Burrell), the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman (Max Charles), use their time machine - The Wabac - to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes The Wabac out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny (Ariel Winter), they accidently rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. Together, the time traveling trio will make their mark on history.
In the clips shown during the sneak peek, we get a glimpse into Sherman's life, a shy boy who's also attracted to his classmate Penny. During a friendly classmate visit to the Peabody penthouse, Mr. Peabody advises Sherman not to say a word to Penny about their Wabac machine, but wanting to impress Penny, Sherman spills the beans and confesses all. Unbeknownst to Mr. Peabody, Penny decides to take a joyride in the Wabac and now it's both Mr. Peabody's and Sherman's job to make sure she comes back in one piece. They first arrive in Ancient Egypt where they find Penny already engaged to king Tutankhamun. Once Penny realizes the fate of King Tut and her fate, which is to follow after his death, Peabody and Sherman must help her escape the royal palace. We are then transported to Renaissance Italy where Peabody, Sherman, and Penny meet Leonardo DiVinci in the mist of painting the Mona Lisa. After much exploration in DiVinci's workshop, Sherman and Penny take his flying machine out for a ride and discover that it works! The next and last scene that we were treated to is taking place while Mr. Peabody and Sherman are caught in an argument. To rebel, Sherman traveled to ancient Greece during the Trojan War. He has joined the Greek forces and is hiding in the body of War Horse which is about to be delivered. Peabody finds Sherman and tries to convince him that this is no place for a boy. Comedy then ensues as the Greek Commander 100 percent sides with his new solder Shermanius.
According to Ty Burrell it was a scary process in finding the voice.
"It was huge shoes to fill...I have a terribly low voice which gave me trouble when I was Sherman's age and I was trying to flirt with girls but having to make it my own was fun."
He also admitted that playing a genius has been his biggest stretch to date. According to director Rob Minkoff finding the right actor to voice Mr. Peabody was tricky. He didn't want someone who would do a Bill Scott (original Mr. Peabody) impression since it was something that was done over 50 years ago. When they started to look at Ty they thought he embodied all the different aspects they were trying to convey. Rob thought "there was an underlying warmth that we really liked and wanted to bring to the character and Ty had it.
"It's also no coincidence that Ty voices a dog since he's a huge dog lover. "At the moment my wife doesn't allow us to have a dog since we're traveling around so much but in a few years we have negotiated that we will have one!"
This will also be a great history lesson for the whole family as we follow Mr. Peabody, Sherman, and Penny to ancient Egypt, the Trojan War, and to Renaissance Italy. According to Ty "there is a really cool aspect in this film, it will allow kids to put personalities to these historical figures and maybe draw them into learning more about them." Just working on the film made Ty want to go back and learn more about history from having these great voice actors put life into those characters. Director Rob Minkoff also agrees. "When I was a kid there was so much I learned from cartoons and it was usually sneaked in."
When Rob first started working at Disney, it was really important to him to not to talk down to kids, his hope is that they'll see new knowledge and get more interested in it. Rob also had the challenge early on deciding how much and where would the time travel take place.
"There was always something tugging on us and wanting Mr. Peabody to meet a variety of historical figures...we had an entire movie cut together of all the places we are not going."
The MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN director hinted that we might see this on the DVD extras.
The footage previewed at Fox Studios certainly proved fun to watch, but more importantly it’s a history lesson without knowing that you’re getting schooled. Mr. Peabody's one liners and jokes is fitting for adults and children alike.
MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN will be in theaters March 7, 2014 in 3D.
