The number one movie in America, THE PURGE starring Ethan Hawke, may be just a film, but in real-life, home invasions happen every day. To prepare for our own purge, CineMovie was sent off to learn Krav Maga, a self-defense system taught by the Israeli Defense Forces. Watch and learn some techniques that may save your life one day.
Let's hope life doesn't imitate art in this scenario from THE PURGE. For one night, all crimes are legal, and the Sandin family must fight back when intruders break into their home. Most people don't realize there are plenty of household items that can be used to defend yourself. CineMovie's Sue Evelyn Gil put on her workout clothes and joined 2nd degree black belt trainer Christian "Junior" Medina at the KMW Training Center in Los Angeles for some lessons in self-defense.
According to Junior, the Krav Maga tactics are a simple, effective self defense system that emphasizes instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios. Junior explains that in Israel, every citizen must serve in the Israeli Defense Forces for two years regardless of your shape or size. Everyone is taught the country's official self defense system. The tactics have been widely adapted in the United States and around the globe.
Sue Evelyn got her taste of fighting back an assailant with lessons in disarming someone with a gun, knife or stick. The most important technique that everyone can remember is hitting below the belt for male attackers. Junior explains a few hits to the groin with your knee will stunt your attacker.
Finally, he says any item in your home can be used to defend yourself such as a chord, lamp, and a pillow case.
THE PURGE is currently in movie theaters.
