Moises Arguello of Whittier, CA hopes to turn his first place win in the Scarface Kingpins of Design Contest into a launching pad for his own business graphics company.
The Scarface Kingpins of Design Contest campaign on Facebook encouraged fans to submit artwork inspired by the iconic Brian de Palma film starring Al Pacino in one of the most memorable scenes in cinema.
Moises Arguello and others submitted their work, and Universal Home Entertainment staff picked the top 25 designs. The voting was then turned over to Facebook fans and friends. One grand prize winner's work will be featured on a billboard in support of Scarface's Blu-ray release. Moises Arguello's winning artwork along with the eight first prize designs will be featured in the SCARFACE Limited Edition Blu-Ray on September 6. He also walks away with a SCARFACE Limited Edition Blu-ray.
CineMovie spoke with Moises Arias via telephone about receiving the exciting news through Facebook.
How did it feel winning the Scarface Kingpins of Design Contest?
It felt really good. I was first notified thorugh email and that's how I knew. And then I saw the post on Facebook as well. All my friends got to see that I won before I got to tell them.
What inspired your design?
As a matter of fact, it was my wife. We are actually both big fans of the movie. Looking at the movie images they sent us, we were looking at it and deciding what to do with 20 different pictures of scenes from the movie. Why not put them all together like a collage or montage? And that made for the famous scene that everybody knows, when he's shooting himself out of the house at the end of the movie. Then we both put it together and both fell in love with it. We submitted it and waited to see what happens. And low and behold, here we are.
So you were limited in using the files the studio sent you?
Yes, they provided us the artwork. They said these are the files and logos you can use. "Don't use anything outside of it and be creative as possible within these files."
Other people used quotes from the movie in their designs?
I figured that was a typical way of going about doing it. I wanted something visual.
Are you excited about being featured in the Scarface Blu-ray release?
I'm very excited. I can't wait. I keep telling everybody that I'm going to buy them a copy. I want to share my tiny success with a huge, huge movie coming out on September 6.
Do you design professionally or as a hobby?
I'll say both. I'm actually a motion graphics artist for United Healthcare. I basically handle any graphics or video for the external and internal companies. Actually, I do it as a hobby on the side. I'm in the infancy stages of starting my own company. Graphics, video, photography and stuff... I love the whole art aspect.
So this is a great start then?
This is an awesome start. Very excited about it.
What is the name of your company?
M&A Media which is [named for] me and my wife -- Moises and Ashley. We have a fan page and website. It's in the infancy stage but we're getting work here and there. Hopefully this will boost it up a little bit.
Are you a movie fan?
Oh, yeah! I love movies. Definitly my number one. I try to get out and see movies as often as possible. I like old action movies and even horror movies like Alfred Hitchock's films.
What movie would be your dream job to design for?
That's a good question. Actually I would love to do smething for Disney or Pixar. Love the whole 3D and where they've taken that. So I would love to get involved with that and learn a little bit of that. Anything Pixar like the new
Cars movie I would love to be part of.
Did you like any of the other artwork?
I actually did like the ones that used five quotes in different shades of white. And they played with one of the Al Pacino picture where he's holding a gun. I really like what they did with that.
Your parents must be proud?
They are very happy.
Follow Moises on Facebook and you can see his artwork and other winners on the SCARFACE Limited Blu-ray Edition on sale September 6, 2011.
