Costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo dresses Matt Damon and the cast in THE GREAT WALL in impressive and colorful Chinese military uniforms worthy of an Oscar nomination. CineMovie sat down with the costume designer who describes the director's vision behind the costumes and Matt Damon's input into his character's look. Watch the video interview below.
Mexican-born Mayes C Rubeo is behind the costume designs of AVATAR, WARCRAFT, WORLD WAR Z and she recently dressed Marvel superheroes in THOR: RAGNAROK. For THE GREAT WALL, Rubeo had to dress a Chinese army known as the Unknown Order, and she created over 10,000 pieces for the crew and extras. While the costumes were based on ancient Chinese military garb, she tells CineMovie she took license with the colors.
Opening February 17, the epic fantasy-adventure film takes place in ancient Northern China at a military outpost called the Fortress City where an army protects the Chinese empire from alien creatures. The greatest defensive structure ever built, the Great Wall, isn't enough to hold the monsters back. THE GREAT WALL stars Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal (NARCOS, GAME OF THRONES) and well-known Chinese actors Hanyu Zhang, Lin Gengxin, Eddie Peng Yu-Yen, Xuan Huang and pop stars Lu Han of EXO and Junkai Wang of TFBOYS.
THE GREAT WALL marks director Zhang Yimou's first English-language production and the largest film ever shot entirely in China.
