Disney and Lucasfilm announced on May the 4th day a new film is in the works with Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNAROK, JOJO RABBIT) directing and co-writing as well as a STAR WARS series with Emmy®-nominated writer Leslye Headland developing. Waititi has expressed interest in helming a STAR WARS film for a long time so the news doesn't come as much of a surprise, but now the lingering question is what character will be the focus of the new feature film. See the official press release below.
Given the fanfare around Disney+'s "The Mandalorian" and the polarizing response to the spin-offs based on popular characters, expect the new film to be focus on a relatively unknown character from the STAR WARS universe. The New Zealander will be co-writing the script with 1917's Oscar® nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns.
The JOJO RABBIT writer/director dipped his toe in the STAR WARS universe by directing an episode of "The Mandalorian," and no doubt that experience convinced Disney he was right person to launch the next phase of STAR WARS on the big screen.
The announcement did not include any descriptions or plots for the new STAR WARS-themed properties nor the release dates. However, the new series may take a back seat in production since the highly-anticipated series based on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) from ROGUE ONE and Ewan McGregor's return as Obi-Wan Kenobi have yet to go into production.
Disney also dropped an announcement of a new series with Emmy® nominee Leslye Headland as the show runner. The press release was also vague in the direction of the new show.
The entire STAR WAR filmography and television shows are now available on Disney+.
