The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 ($282.4 mill) and Skyfall ($280 mill) came in a close at number four and number five respectively. Both films are continuing to take in movie dollars over the holidays and might change positions by years end.
The Amazing Spider-Man did decent business but only reached number 6 with $262 million in ticket sales in North America.
Three animated films made the top ten with Buena Vista's Brave, Dreamworks' Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, and Universal Pictures Dr. Seuss' The Lorax rounding out the list.
The biggest surprise of the year was Seth MacFarlane's Ted which went on to earn $218.7 million for the low-budget film about a foul-mouthed talking teddy bear.
According to Box Office Mojo, 653 fllms were released in 2012 and will most likely cross $10.5 million in total gross for all films. 2012 was slightly higher than 2011, but almost equal to 2010's box office total.
