The new TRANSFORMERS movie has begun production, and Paramount Pictures held a virtual event to spill the tea on the seventh film in the franchise. Here’s what director Steven J. Caple Jr. (CREED II), producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback revealed about the new Transformer characters that will be featured in the film coming to theaters June 24, 2022.

TITLE
TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS will take form as a live-action version of Beast Wars, the animated 1996-1999 television series.

OFFICIAL PLOT
“Returning to the action and spectacle that first captured moviegoers around the world 14 years ago with the original Transformers, TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure and introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.

SETTING
Brooklyn, New York circa 1994 will be setting for TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS. Director Steven Caple Jr. confirmed hip hop culture will be prominent given the height of the new musical movement at the time.

Peru will also be the site of production. The filmmakers revealed the ancient history of the Transformers will be introduced, hence Peru’s vast landscape or pyramids may serve as the backdrop as it did in Michael Bay’s REVENGE OF THE FALLEN.

RETURNING TRANSFORMERS

Optimus Prime the G1 version will be the lead robot, but he won’t be the same character from the Michael Bay movies. Like Bumblebee’s origin story, Prime will be a different version of the character. In RISE OF THE BEASTS, he’ll be landing on Earth for the first time so his reverence for humans isn’t quite there yet. The producer confirmed Peter Cullen will reprise the voice of Prime.

Bumblebee will be part of the movie. This entry takes place after the events of his 2018 origins movie so he’ll transform into the Camaro seen at the end of the film, but he’ll be an off-road version. The image released makes dramatic changes to the body of the Camaro.

NEW TRANSFORMERS

Producer di Bonaventura says the film will have “elements not seen before.” There will be many more tribes beyond the Autobots and Decepticons. New Transformer characters will be introduced, he adds.

During the event, some cool concept art for the new characters was revealed which unfortunately we can’t share.

Director Caple reveals the Predicons will be reptilian in nature. Some were briefly seen in previous movies.

A few details were revealed about the following new characters that include three female Transformers.

Arcee
Optimus Prime’s loyal follower transforms into a Ducati 916, and she looked fierce in the concept art.

Mirage
Mirage is described as “anti-authority,” and mostly transforms into a Porsche 911, but he can shape into various vehicles.

Nightbird
The female villain is Scourge’s right-hand woman. The purple ninja-looking robot transforms into a sleek racecar

Scourge
The main villain’s design is ominous and frightening. Producer di Bonaventura reveals his design is made up of insignias taken from his fallen Transformer victims.

MAXIMALS
The Maximals from the Beast Wars also join the fight in the new TRANSFORMERS movie. Images of these robots in beast forms were shown. All three Maximals were similar in copper-tone colors. The director revealed they used natural material to transform these characters.

Airazor
The Peregrine Falcon is majestic with her blue-piercing eyes.

Rhinox
The massive beast looks very mechanical in nature, but no doubt he could bulldoze anything.

Optimus Primal
The scariest looking of the bunch is an ape with a fierce face.

CAST
The human cast made an appearance as well to talk about their characters.

Anthony Ramos (IN THE HEIGHTS) plays Noah, an ex-military character caring for his family. As a fan of the original animated series, Ramos came into the movie eager and excited to be part of the franchise.

Dominique Fishback (JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH) plays Elena, an artifact researcher working at a museum. While she didn’t reveal much, we can surmise that she’ll be the historical expert who puts things into context.

Both the producer and director revealed there are lot more new characters in the movie that they have yet to disclose.
