Add a commentMULAN's cinematography is worthy of a big screen viewing but given the current pandemic, Disney made the right decision sending it to Disney+ as a premium access choice for families to enjoy. The live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated movie is a totally different vibe and tone with many changes. MULAN has it all - majestic landscapes, gorgeous costumes, a great cast and a great message for young girls.
Add a commentBILL & TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE was quintessential 80s, and for the time it was a novel concept but the 2.0 version feels out of date in BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC. However, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are most excellent as Bill and Ted especially when they meet other versions of themselves in the future, but their offspring were mere carbon copies of the original dudes that never catches on. There's one new character that steals the show.

Don't expect a biographical documentary on Robin Williams in the new film, ROBIN'S WISH. Instead ROBIN'S WISH sets the record straight about William's suicide. His widow Susan Schneider Williams describes how the comedian/actor was literally not in his right mind when he took his life. After his death, an autopsy revealed he was suffering from a degeneration of the brain called Lewy Body Dementia. Williams' wife, friends and NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM director Shawn Levy and tv producer/writer David E. Kelly describe his deteriorating state of mind leading to his death.
Add a commentIf you're looking for a historical-based story, DESERT ONE recounts the failed U.S. Special Forces rescue mission during the 1980 Iran hostage crisis with commentary from then President Jimmy Carter, the former hostages, the Iranian hostage takers and the servicemen involved. Two-time Academy Award®-winner Barbara Kopple chronicles the misson from the very start through the disastrous result. The mission was jinxed from the onset. The film offers much detail about the incursion into Iran during the dead of night with some never before seen archival material and animated re-enactments.
Add a commentRZA directs the riveting and timely, CUT THROAT CITY, a crime thriller that explores the reasons why black men turn to crime when there are no other options available. The film which is now playing in movie theaters, stars a solid cast with Shameik Moore (INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, DOPE), Ethan Hawke, Terrence Howard, Eiza Gonzales, Wesley Snipes and Tip T.I. Harris. If you liked SET IT OFF (1996) starring Jada Pinkett-Smith and Queen Latifah, this is a more violent male version of that film.
Add a commentDisney+'s THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN is the perfect family movie to watch and discuss in your living room when it premieres Friday, August 14. Adapted from Katherine Applegate's book, the screenplay by Mike White isn't subtle about the subject matter, but sometimes we need a kick in the head when it comes to animal captivity.
Add a commentAt first glance, SPUTNIK's premise appears to rip off ALIEN but the Russian sci-fi only borrows that concept and elevates into something more original. Don't come looking for an action-filled movie, however, it will have you on the edge of your seat.
Add a commentThe virgin. The floozy. A sex-starved teen and the jock, all walk into a cabin in the woods, and one by one they die a horrible death. MURDER IN THE WOODS is just like every other teen slasher movie out there except this one stars a Latinx cast, and written and directed by Latinx filmmakers. Usually I'd applaud the effort, but sadly MURDER IN THE WOODS is a carbon copy of past movies, and a missed opportunity to inject new life into the slasher/horror genre with Latinx flavor.

Ron Howard chronicles Paradise, CA resident's recovery after the devastating fires in late 2018 in REBUILDING PARADISE. The new documentary follows families and individuals on their long road to healing both emotionally and financially over the course of a year following the devastation. The film is currently playing in movie theaters, and will air this Fall on the National Geographic channel.
Add a commentNothing irks me more than bad acting, and PAYDIRT is full of it, mostly coming from the female characters who are only there to be objectified. Starring Luke Goss (THE HARD WAY, HELLBOY II, BLADE II) and Val Kilmer (THE DOORS, HEAT, TOMBSTONE), the film from writer/directer Christian Sesma is rife with bad dialogue, an unwatchable performance by Kilmer and a perpetuation of the Latino stereotype.
Add a commentDavid Ayer (SUICIDE SQUAD, FURY) takes to the streets of Los Angeles once again for THE TAX COLLECTOR starring Bobby Soto, Shia LaBeouf and George Lopez. The violent crime thriller has the B-movie vibe while the story is cliché from start to end. You get the impression the END OF WATCH and HARSH TIMES writer/director dug up this one up from his archives because it feels dated like one of those 70s Mexploitation films. Fans of that sub genre may enjoy this one.
Add a commentJoey King, Jacob Elordi and Joel Courtney return to THE KISSING BOOTH in a sequel that brings in third parties to the mix. Here's our review of THE KISSING BOOTH 2. The first six minutes are spoiler free while the latter part is full of plot twists and surprises.
Add a commentThere’s a reason why the Tom Hanks naval drama was dumped from a theatrical release to Apple TV+. The World War II movie is one of dullest entry in the genre, and the shortest clocking in at 88 minutes. With little character development, GREYHOUND has some intense moments and intrigue, but initially it's difficult to become invested in it.
Add a commentAt the end of VOLITION, the main character boils down the events that have just unfolded to a single piece of dialogue. “Maybe it is that simple.” Actually the movie from first time feature film director Tony Dean Smith is anything but simple.
Add a commentWalter Mercado was a staple in every Latino household with his televised astrological forecast. Many of us thought his Liberace-style on screen persona was just that but Netflix's original documentary, MUCHO MUCHO AMOR shows the beloved television personality is exactly what we see on screen.
Add a commentIn FORCE OF NATURE, Mel Gibson and Emile Hirsch play the douchey cops people are protesting against. FORCE OF NATURE also stars Kate Bosworth in an edge-of-your-seat thriller that has many flaws but it'll keep your interest, however the timing for this movie is inappropriate.
Add a commentJoseph Gordon-Levitt doesn’t take the Bruce Willis/DIE HARD approach in the hijacking thriller, 7500 by Patrick Vollrath in his feature film debut. Instead Gordon-Levitt plays an everyman relying on the assailant’s humanity to save the day.
Add a commentBella Thorne ("The Duff," MIDNIGHT SUN) and Jake Manley ("The Order," HOLIDATE) are a modern day Bonnie & Clyde except one of them isn't interested in money but social media fame in INFAMOUS. Written and directed by Joshua Caldwell, the crime caper is a morality tale in the age of social media when everyone is looking to cash in on instant fame no matter the cost.
